Why the Name TrawsModa

The word breaks into two roots:

Traws → from Welsh. It means across, beyond, over, through, transform. It carries the sense of shifting states, moving between worlds, or re-shaping what exists. That fits the way we see design: take something familiar and rework it so it functions better.

Moda → from Latin and carried through Italian/Spanish. It means mode, manner, way, or fashion. In Italian and Spanish it’s everyday shorthand for style or the way something is done. For us, it’s about how you operate, move, and live.

Together, TrawsModa literally means a way of moving beyond. For us, that’s the point: creating gear that helps you shift between work, travel, and play without switching who you are.

 

Our Story

This whole thing started with two friends messing around in shops, on trails, and building whatever they needed to get by. After a while, they realized they were always running into the same problem — the gear out there just wasn’t cutting it. So they decided to start building their own.

Devon Barker

Devon’s been wrenching basically his whole life. He built his first Land Cruiser engine with his dad when he was eight, and he’s the one who got Josh into 4x4s and overlanding in the first place. He taught Josh how to wrench and has been his guide through all of it since.

He’s a machinist and fabricator, a legit tech/computer whiz, and he’s got a knack for branding and problem-solving too. If it involves machines, tech, or figuring out how to make something actually work, Devon’s usually the one driving.

Josh Stein

Josh comes from the business and engineering side. He’s an entrepreneur who’s started and run several businesses, with a background in product development, sales, and systems design. His focus has always been on connecting the dots — building frameworks, scaling ideas, and making sure projects actually move from concept to real-world products.

Where Devon’s most at home in the shop and on the trail, Josh brings the big-picture strategy, product vision, and business side that keeps things growing.

Together

That mix is what TrawsModa runs on: Devon brings the deep technical skills and hands-on know-how, Josh brings the entrepreneurial drive and product development background, and together they make the kind of gear they couldn’t find anywhere else.
